Safe Removal of Color Touch, Stains, and Tape

In the comic book hobby, the word “restoration” often carries a negative stigma. That is because CGC defines restoration as adding foreign material to a book — which results in a dreaded purple “Restored” label and a drop in market value.

At Comics Reborn, our restoration services do the exact opposite. We specialize in the safe removal of prior amateur repairs, color touch, stubborn stains, and old tape. By removing these foreign substances rather than adding to them, we help collectors improve the appearance of their books while keeping them eligible for a universal (blue) CGC grade.

Understanding the Standard

Restoration vs. Removal: What CGC Looks For

Many collectors are nervous about having any intensive work done on their books for fear of triggering a restoration flag. It is important to understand exactly how the grading companies define this work.

According to CGC’s official standards, restoration is “the act of adding foreign material to a comic book to return its appearance to an ideal or original state.” This includes painting over missing color (color touch), adding piece fill, or using non-archival glue.

However, CGC explicitly states that processes which only remove foreign substance are not considered restoration. This means that safely removing old tape, lifting out stains, or carefully removing prior color touch will not trigger a purple label. Our techniques are designed specifically to operate within these safe boundaries.

Our Specialized Techniques

Targeted Removal Services

These specialized services can be added to any standard pressing and cleaning order during the submission process.

Color Touch Removal

Reversing Prior Amateur Repairs

Previous owners or amateur restorers often use markers, acrylic paint, or watercolors to hide color-breaking spine ticks or cover wear. We use specialized, non-destructive techniques to lift and remove this color touch. This is often preferred over CGC’s in-house method, which sometimes involves physically cutting out the affected area.

Stain & Tanning Removal

Addressing Foxing and Surface Stains

Over decades, comic books can develop foxing, tanning, or absorb environmental stains. We use careful, targeted methods to lighten or remove these blemishes. We strictly avoid chemical baths or bleaching processes that CGC classifies as restoration, ensuring the structural integrity of the paper remains intact.

Sticker & Tape Removal

Safe Extraction of Adhesives

Finding a key issue with a price sticker or a spine reinforced with Scotch tape is frustrating. Attempting to peel these off at home usually results in tearing the cover art. We use controlled techniques to safely dissolve the adhesive and lift the tape or sticker with minimal to no damage to the underlying paper.

Common Questions

Restoration Removal FAQs

Our techniques are designed to be as non-destructive as possible. However, because the color touch was originally applied to hide a defect (like a color-breaking crease), removing the paint will expose the original defect. The book will look more honest, and it will be eligible for a universal grade, but the underlying wear will be visible.
While we use techniques specifically designed to avoid restoration flags, CGC is the final arbiter of all grading decisions. We cannot guarantee a specific label, but our methods align with CGC’s published standards for non-restorative care.
Yes. The process of removing tape or stains involves localized moisture or handling that can cause slight rippling in the paper. A full press is required afterward to ensure the book is perfectly flat and structurally sound.
